Though Zach's parents native language is Spanish, they raised Zach to speak English first.
A few weeks back, Zach was asked by a classmate if he could lend him a dollar. The classmate asked in Spanish, Zach responded, "no problemo." Jennifer Watts, the principle overhead this treasonous conversation and suspended Zach for two days... for speaking Spanish.

Apparently neither irony, nor common sense are lost on Watts. The school provides the resources to hire French and Spanish teachers, offers such courses, and even requires that students be proficient in one of the two languages before they graduate. But Watts suspended Rubio because "we are not in Mexico, we are not in Germany." Exactly when, where, and in what ways is it acceptable for students to utilize the skills they learn in the classroom? Does Watts hold the same standards for science, math and chemistry as she does for Spanish? How about those america-hating-16-year-old-kansans who disrespect America by speaking the French they learned (in class) in the hallways??? OUTRAGE!!!!
As conservatives across America grow in outrage -- because of hateful, legal, law-abiding immigrants like the Rubio's -- there are sweeping attempts to legislate "english-only" policies. Whoever thought THAT is a good idea, in an age of globalization, is a fucking idiot, pardon my french (which I learned in my own high school!)
When considering Rubio's incident, further complications arise from the fact that the student who initiated the conversation (in Spanish) faced no disciplinary action. Unlike most families, who would simply let this run its course, the Rubio family, all of whom are legal citizens, are fighting back. The district has not taken any action against the principle (not even a slap on the wrist), even though she has obviously failed in her ability to set a positive example for all her students.
YOU can send Principle Watts a personal message. I did....and I FEEL GREAT:-)
